    UMBWE ROUTE

(6 DAYS TREK – 8 DAYS PACKAGE)This is a short and more difficult route.

Day 1: Pick up at the Airport, transfer to the hotel in Moshi (B&B).

Day 2: Transfer to Umbwe gate – Umbwe Forest camp (2900m) Early after breakfast drive to Umbwe Gate, where you will complete the entry formalities and have lunch. Trekking today will involve uphill struggles on steep parts of the mountain, getting steeper until we reach to the campsite. Hot dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Forest camp – Barranco camp (3976 m) After breakfast continue steeply through the forest. Soon the taller trees will give way to Giant Erica and Heather, and the air will become drier. The ridge line forms steeply on this day, and on either side of the trail, the terrain drops away steeply. At some point the forest and the clouds will part to give you a fabulous view of Uhuru Peak, seemingly “overhead”. After lunch, you will encounter giant groundsels, seemingly guardians of untouched treasures. After 5 to 7 hours of trekking and scrambling, you reach Barranco camp. There are numerous tiny waterfalls around camp, fed by streams coming down the Great Barranco Valley. Hanging glaciers glint in the sunshine above, amidst an eerie landscape of groundsels (Senecio Kilimanjari), and the uniquely endemic Giant Lobelia.

Day 4: Barranco camp – Karanga camp (4995 m) Today we trek to Karanga Valley Camp, at 13,000 feet (3,950 mt.), between Barranco and Barafu Camps. This day has proven to be very important for acclimatization. The day begins with a scramble up the steep ‘Barranco Wall’, then traversing up and down the slopes of valleys which have carved their way into the mountain’s southern face. Kibo’s glaciers loom above to your left and the jagged peaks of Mawenzi jut into the African sky at just under 17,000 feet straight ahead. We reach the Karanga Valley after 3-4 hours of trekking for a hot lunch. Afternoon to relax or to take excursions from the camp.

Day 5: Karanga camp – Barafu camp (4673 m) From here the trail turns steadily uphill. The temperature will grow colder and the landscape more sparse as we near Barafu Camp. Barafu Camp is set on a small, exposed flat area on a ridge, acting a base camp from which you will make your summit attempt at midnight tonight. Total trekking time is 4-5 hours, with a hot lunch upon reaching camp. The afternoon is yours to rest and prepare for the long night ahead. Eat and drink as much as possible before retiring early to your tent for rest and sleep.

Day 6: Barafu camp – summit – descend to Mweka camp (3068 m) You will start climbing around midnight; temperatures usually range from just below freezing at midnight. After about 6 hrs of slowly walking uphill, you arrive at the edge of the crater: Stella Point, at 19,000 ft (5790 m) on the crater rim, is the end of the steep part of the hike. From here, it’s a gentle slope to Uhuru Peak, the true summit of Kili at (5896 m). The strength it takes to ascend this final piece is for many monumental. After a short time at the summit, we start descending. The path goes down a steep scree slope back to Barafu Camp for some rest, before you have to summon your strength again to descend further to Mweka Camp for the last night on the mountain.

Day 7: Final descend to Mweka Gate It’s an easy 2-3 hours trek through rain forest to go down the final parts of the trail back to the Mweka Gate. Transfer to the hotel in Moshi for overnight.

Day 8: Continue with your next Tour / transfer to Airport.

RONGAI ROUTE: The Rongai Route is one of the easier routes and has very few people on it. The transfer to the trailhead is further than other routes past Rombo Village about 3 hours. Elephants and other wildlife have often been seen on this route. Please email us for full itinerary plus info.

MARANGU ROUTE:This is definitely the easiest and probably the most popular route for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This is a shorter route to the summit. It’s often called the Coca Cola Route not only because climbers can buy soft drinks and snacks at each stop on the way up, but also as a result of its popularity. this is the only route that offers accommodation in huts Kilimanjaro. we recommend this route to younger students and for those who do not like camping.

Red Columbus Monkeys are the most famous inhabitants of the forest; sub-species only found on this island, they can be seen calmly lazing around or fooling amongst themselves in the branches. MT. MERU:

Smaller but still challenging, at 4566 m, Mt Meru offers the avid mountaneer as well as the discerning amateur an unsurpassed challenge.

Day 1: After breakfast, we depart Moshi for Momella Gate. Momella Gate is located near Shamba La Mbogo, a natural glade in the Mt. Meru Game Reserve. It is situated at 1,500m above sea level. Two routes are available from Momella Gate: The first route goes through the forest towards the crater floor and then steeply up to Miriakamba Hut. The second option climbs gradually through the grassland direct to Miriakamba Hut. After all formalities, we begin trekking accompanied by an armed ranger. We will ascend up to Miriakamba Hut situated at 2,500m above sea level. The trekking takes approximately 3 hours. We will be walking amidst the montane forest where various species of flora and fauna can be found on this part of the mountain. There are beautiful views of Arusha National Park’s various landscapes that can be seen from this trek and, weather-permitting, spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro can also be seen. This day is very enjoyable as you also meet a lot of wildlife en route.

Day 2: From Miriakamba Hut the path is steep compared to other mountains in the region. We continue our ascent on a narrow winding trail through a thick montane forest, where various species of vegetation can be seen. There are water streams that we cross before approaching the moorland zone. A good view of Little Meru can be seen on a clear day, just as you approach Saddle Hut. Buffalo footprints can be seen. Some bird species, and plenty of Africana Masaica, a shrub plant that stings can also be seen on both sides of the trail . The ascent takes approximately 4 hours. After our arrival at Saddle Hut (3,500m), you have the option to embark on a 45 minute walk to Little Meru (3,820m). it has a meandering trail which is aided with good grass cover to give you good grip. One can see the Kenyan border from the peak of Little Meru, Ngara Nanyuki -a town that lies after the Arusha National Park, as well as gorgeous views of West Mt, Kilimanjaro and Longido.

Day 3: Our ascent to Big Meru, the summit of Mt. Meru (4,566m) begins at around midnight and takes us from the moorland zone to alpine desert zone. The trek will take approximately 6-7 hours. Along we will pass Rhino Point as we walk around the rim of Meru crater. Conditions are cold and windy and during the rainy season ice and snow can occur in this section of the route. If sunrise is your thing, you have two options: You can trek up to the summit in time to watch the sun rising from behind Kilimanjaro or You can leave Saddle Hut later in the morning and head to Rhino Point, about an hour away. Sunrise here is as impressive and perhaps even more so because you also see the main cliffs of the inner wall of the crater being illuminated by the rising sun. You can always add an extra day to the itinerary in order to appreciate both. From the summit we return to Saddle Hut for breakfast and then proceed to Miriakamba Hut and eventually down to Momella gate, in the late afternoon, where you will be awaited by our transport to hotel in Moshi.
